Winter

Artists: Jack. S
Material: Acrylic on wood panel
Size: 18W x 24H

Walking with the aid of a crutch presses circles into the ground with each step. Legs swing in a gentle arch, crutches tap the ground on impact – a cyborgian rhythm is made. If crutches frame each footstep with a pair of points, riding on a wheelchair prints a pair of parallel lines onto the ground. These forms of movement and mark-making played on Jaden S’s mind as she created the paintings on view.

In this piece the artist is expressive with their use of colors and texture. Layers of paint are applied with a pallet knife, scraped off, and reapplied again. The points and lines represent the form of footprints in the snow, as if made by walking with crutches. Having lived with Covid long-haulers for the past two years, the artist's use of bright vibrant colors mimics sunlight peaking through the snow, reflecting the struggle and ultimate adaptation of the sick to their current mode of transportation.
