What comes into view as we rest from illness? With luck, flowers in a vase brought by a loved one. In Lee K’s artwork botanicals rest against a backdrop of windowpane shadows. Exchanged across occasions as expressions of care, flowers suggest to the recipient both stillness and growth.
Gifting flowers can hold an array of emotions from gratitude to loneliness. They are given as a congratulatory gesture to musicians after a performance, to artists after an exhibition, to loved ones on special occasions, or to friends or family at the hospital. Cut flowers are ephemeral, they eventually whilt and remind us of passing time. In these pieces, the artist has chosen to use real flowers - keeping the artist or the buyer responsible for the upkeep of the work. This act of replenishing the flowers can be repetitive, yet humbling experience.
